Helfer was raised in rural Donalda, Alberta, Canada, to Dennis Helfer and Elaine Helfer. [2] Her ancestry is German, English. Swedish, and Norwegian. She went to William E. Hay Composite High School located in Stettler. The school was located at the farm of her family with her three sisters: Trena, Tammy and Tara. When she was waiting in line at a theatre, a scout for a modeling agency was able to spot Helfer.
